Obama to Court Young Voters During Facebook Town Hall

U.S. President Barack Obama is to discuss reducing the deficit Wednesday as he reaches out to young voters during a town hall meeting hosted by Facebook.

President Obama will visit the headquarters of the popular social networking website in Palo Alto, California, for an online question and answer session.

The event is expected to help Obama reach technology-savvy, younger voters, who were a part of his base during the 2008 election. He is discuss his plan for reducing the deficit by $4 trillion over 12 years.

More than 500 million people around the world have Facebook profiles. The president’s official Facebook page has more than 19 million fans.

But as the American economy falters, Obama has seen his approval ratings drop to some of the lowest of his presidency. The Gallup research group says 48 percent of Americans disapprove of Obama's job performance.

The stop at Facebook’s headquarters is part of a three-day trip to the West Coast. Obama is scheduled to participate in other town hall meetings in the U.S. states of California and Nevada to build support for his deficit-cutting plans. He will also attend fundraising events as he campaigns for re-election.

Analysts expect the 2012 presidential race to be the most expensive ever in the United States with Obama campaign organizers saying they hope to raise as much as $1 billion. Other presidential hopefuls would need to raise similar amounts to be considered competitive.
